  11. SerPrefs is an improvement on the old Serial prefs util.
  12.  
  13. SerPrefs extends several settings/options of the original,
  14. to do this effectivly a new serial.prefs format have been created.
  15. Currently SerPrefs only support the use of a serial device name,
  16. and Sharedmode. Other extensions will be added later.
  17.  
  18. The new serial.prefs can use prefs by old programs
  19. like the ORIGINAL "Sys:Prefs/Serial" found on the Workbench disks,
  20. and to convert from old to new simply load the old prefs into SerPrefs,
  21. then save it. And that's all you need to do! :-)
  22. Old serial.prefs software will still be able to read the new prefs,
  23. but unable to use the extra information stored.

  25. SerPrefs even show the version of your serial.device,
  26. and have most of the standard prefsmenu items most prefs utils have.
  27. Everything is in a single gui, that is very easy to use.
  28. And you can choose the serial device to use, along with unit number etc.

  30. All normal (plus some extra) baud rates are supported,
  31. along with a buffer range that is more than enough.
  32. It also have separate output/input settings,
  33. for future support or special software.

  37. o Input and Output Buffer (range 0-64 MB)
  38. o Input and Output Xon/Xoff, RTS/CTS
  39. o Sharedmode, selectable xxx.device and unit
  40. o Parity Even/Odd/Mark/Space, 5-32 data bits, 0-2 stop bits
  41. o Makes use of custom prefs/serialprefs icons if found.

  43. INSTALLATION!
  44. Just copy it to the SYS:Prefs/ drawer,
  45. you can replace your original "Serial" with SerPrefs.
  46. To do this just copy SerPrefs over the original Serial,
  47. SerPrefs support all tooltypes etc, that Serial do.

  49. PLEASE NOTE!
  50. The new settings will not work unless programs,
  51. are aware of the new serial.prefs
  52. As of 24th June 1997 SerPrefs is the first program
  53. to support the new SERN chunk (the way the serial name is stored),
  54. and the SharedMode option.
  55. Hopefully more will follow later.
  56. Also note that some older software may have trouble with
  57. new baudrates, this is caused by Intuition
  58. (internal prefs system is very old)

  64. The only way to fix this is to get a updated version of those programs,
  65. and for those programs to not use Intution's internal prefs,
  66. but rather read the serial.prefs file directly
  67. (intuition is able to notify programs about prefs file changes :-)

  70. ICON support!
  71. SerPrefs will use "ENV:sys/def_prefs.info" as a icon
  72. for the user prefs files to save,
  73. if you don't want SerPrefs to use your standard prefs icon,
  74. then make a icon called "ENV:sys/def_serialprefs.info"
  75. SerPrefs will use this instead, don't forget to also copy
  76. that icon to "ENVARC:sys/" so it is available after a reboot.

  86. What's changed?

  88.  v2.3 - (20.8.1997) Large and small changes, from a certain point of view!
  89.         Improved the version check module (the same that DVC use :-)
  90.         serial.prefs frozen, meaning that the format as it is
  91.         is the default standard for future SerPrefs versions.
  92.         An extension is planned for the future (see developer docs),
  93.         suggestions on what to put in it are most welcome.
  94.         Minor internal cleanup, looked thru all the code zzzzz.
  95.         Found a bug in GUI update routine, shared and devicename was not
  96.         updated when changing prefs (they where loaded and saved though :-)
  97.         SerPrefs seems very good now, if ANY bugs are found
  98.         LET ME KNOW and they will be fixed at once,
  99.         if there are any to find at all :-)
  100.         If all is okay, this version will be the base for SerPrefs v3.0
  101.         Other SERIAL developers are encouraged to contact me,
  102.         for discussion of the new System Default serial.prefs format...
